On Thursday, the group was received at Town Hall for the
customary glass (or two) of Kir, the traditional sweet cocktail
made of 1/4 blackcurrant liqueur and 3/4 dry white wine. The
following afternoon, Laura, Pamela and Kelly accompanied Prof. Jeantet
to Clermont Castle to meet 99-year-old painter
Suzanne Lansé and the directors of the "Cézanne
in Savoie" Association. We visited a small exhibit of Ms. Lansé's work
and walked around the building, the sole example of a Renaissance castle
in Savoie. The day was beautifully sunny and we saw the mountains around Lake Annecy
very well.
On Saturday, we had a very full calendar. We went into Annecy in the morning to visit the various churches as well as the castle that overlooks the Vieille Ville (Old Town). The weather was sunny and warm, and we were grateful, after a steep hike up to the castle, to visit the refreshingly cool buildings which are home to traditional folk art as well as large amounts of modern art that was much less well appreciated by the group.
After a picnic lunch in a park in the center of town, we had coffee before visiting the old prison and courts (le Palais de l'Isle) and the cathedral.
Later that same day, a banquet was held in honor of the student group. Association president Yvette Millot worked long hours in the kitchen with volunteers preparing meals for over 160 people. After a dinner of Périgord salad, Guinea fowl, Beaufort and Reblochon cheese, and tarte tatin, dancing lasted well into the night.
