The
Summer Program in the French Alps
The
Summer Program in the Alps, also called the "Faverges Program,"
runs for six weeks from mid-May to late June. Students who meet course
prerequisites can register for classes and spend six weeks in the
Alpine town of Faverges,
near Geneva (Switzerland), and the French city of Annecy.
During the six-week
program, students visit such places as Annecy, Albertville, the Chamonix
valley at the foot of Mont Blanc, Geneva's cathedral, old quarter,
and the United Nations compound which is located in the former League
of Nations building. Students each live with a French host family
and take part in daily family activities in and around Faverges.
|
Classes
meet five times a week, and the group goes on numerous excursions
to learn about the long history of the Savoie region. Faverges, a
quiet little town, has Roman monuments and a fine archeological
museum. The nearby city of Annecy, one of the world's most beautiful
cities, is built around a medieval castle and walled town which have
been carefully restored and now attract tourists from around the world.
|

No visit to Savoie
would be complete without several excursions into the mountains; we
take a day trip to Chamonix, where we board cog railways and cablecars
to see and learn about mountains and glaciers as well as the flora and
fauna of the High Alps. Every Program includes at least one ride up
a cablecar to the top of a mountain such as Le Brévent
or l'Aiguille du Midi (12,500 ft.).
|

The group
also takes the high-speed TGV train from Annecy on a three-hour
ride to Paris; we spend four days in early June in France's capital,
during which we walk many kilometers, ride the métro,
and visit world-famous landmarks such as Notre Dame cathedral,
Sainte Chapelle, Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower, Avenue des Champs
Elysées, and the Louvre Museum. Some time is reserved
for individual activities so that the Paris visit also becomes
a voyage of personal discovery!

The
Program is open to students in good standing who meet course prerequisites.
Students from The University of Akron, Kent State University, Miami
of Ohio, Muskingum College and the University of Michigan have participated
in the Program. Courses offered include French 311, a modern French
civilization class and French 402, a French conversation class which
has as its special focus modern French vernacular and communication.
A flyer and up-to-date fact sheet are available from the Department

Starting in 1997, the Director has filed illustrated
reports about the Program's progress on the World Wide Web. In this
way, family and friends of the Program's participants have been able
to follow the trip from afar, often seeing pictures and text describing
the group's activities that very day.... The reports from the past
four Programs are still posted on the University's server and give
a good idea of the Program's features. The reports can be consulted
by clicking on the links below.
