Why Study French ?

Course distribution requirement for the Major

To obtain a major concentration in French, a student must complete
27 credits of upper-level French courses in the following way:

6 credits of C&C (Comp. / Conversation)
6 credits of Civ (Civilisation, Culture)
6 credits of Literature
6 credits of other French electives
3 credits of Advanced Grammar

All in-major courses in French must be passed with a grade of C or better in order to count toward fulfillment of the major requirements.

In order for a student to complete the requirements for the major in timely fashion, it is essential that we draw up a study sequence together: students should schedule appointments with their faculty advisor to select a reasonable and feasible course of study. Any of the full-time French faculty may be chosen as an advisor. We encourage our advisees to meet with us every semester to review progress.

All students enrolled in Buchtel College of Arts & Sciences must also check the requirements for graduation, which can be found in the University Bulletin.

Requirements for the Minor in French

The requirements for a French Minor are 18 credits, including 12 credits beyond the second year. Your two semesters of intermediate French, Fr 201 and Fr 202, can give you six of the 18 credits; you need only 12 more credits at the 300 and/or 400 level. The next courses after 202 are three credits each, so you will need four more courses to fulfill the requirement. This can normally be done in three semesters.

Important note: The university allows as many as 6 “bypassed credits” to count toward the Minor. If you tested out of one or two semesters of intermediate French, the bypassed credits you received will count toward the Minor.
Note also: All courses counting toward the minor must be taken for a grade; credits earned with CR/NCR will not count toward the Minor.

2. All students (graduate or undergraduate) who are pursuing teaching licensure in a foreign language through the College of Education are required upon admission prior to beginning their coursework in the foreign language to take a diagnostic examination administered by the Department of Modern Languages, in order to determine their level of language proficiency and the proper level of course placement.
