Note: The Final Exam will NOT be given early; any make-up final exams will have to be scheduled AFTER the regularly scheduled final exam period. Only severe illness documented by a physician will be accepted as an excuse.

Goals of German 101-201:
German 101-103 emphasizes all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) and
will:

help you to acquire enough proficiency in the language to participate in conversations with speakers of German on a limited basis. You will learn how to function in a German-speaking environment and express yourself on a number of topics with a reasonable degree of accuracy.
enable you to understand speakers of German on topics beyond basic survival needs, such as hobbies, interests, personal history, etc.
help you to acquire reading strategies in German which will enable you to handle different kinds of texts with limited dictionary use.
enable you to write short messages, postcards, letters, take simple notes, compose coherent paragraphs on everyday topics and issues, write short summaries, etc.
provide you with the basic grammatical and syntactical structures and patterns of German.
inform you about various cultural aspects of the German-speaking countries.

Additional material: Audio tapes
At the beginning of the semester you will be asked to
either
go to the Language Resource Center (Olin 375) regularly in order to do your lab homework
or
go to the Audio-Visual Services (Bierce Library 60A) at the beginning of the semester. Upon your request the staff of Audio-Visual Services will duplicate the "Deutsch, na klar" lab audiotapes of the introductory chapter as well as of chapters 1 to 4 for a small duplication fee. If you choose to provide your own tapes, you will need three 90-minute audio tapes.
or
give your instructor three 90-minute audio tapes within the first 3 days of classes. Your
instructor will have copies made for you in our language lab. The tapes will be given back to you
by your instructor.

Note: You will need the tapes in order to do your lab manual homework.
The last two options will allow you to do your lab homework at home.

Grading:

Attendance 10%
Participation 10%
Tests 35% [each of the five tests (including the test on the Einführung) counts 7%]
Homework 20% (workbook, lab manual, quizzes on vocabulary homework, and any other homework given by the instructor)
Final Exam (including final oral exam) 25%

Note: Submit your work in advance if you anticipate an excused absence. Unexcused absences will significantly lower your final grade.

A= missing less than 3 class periods for the semester;
B = missing 4-6 class periods for the semester;
C = missing 7-9 class periods for the semester;
D = missing 10-12 class periods for the semester;
F = missing more than 12 class periods for the semester.

If your absences accumulate to one third or more of the whole semester, your overall course grade might result in an F. In case of an accident, major illness, etc. inform your instructor as soon as possible and provide written proof of inability to attend in order to avoid a deduction of points. Being late for class will also lower your attendance grade.

* You will receive 2 participation grades during the semester. They will count for the overall participation grade, and will be based partly on your classroom participation and partly on the extent to which you are prepared to participate in the daily class work.
