The Department
offers major courses of study in French and Spanish.
All levels of language, civilization, and literature courses are offered
in these two languages.
- The
French major consists of 27 credits above second year (6 credits literature,
6 credits culture, 6 credits electives, 6 credits conversation and
composition, and 3 credits advanced grammar).
- The
Spanish major requires 28 credits above the second year (at least
one language course, one literature course, and one culture course,
all at the 400 level). All courses in Spanish must receive a C
grade or better to count towards the major requirements.
- All
in-major courses in French or Spanish must be passed with a grade
of C or better in order to count toward fulfillment of the major requirements.
- Since
spring semester 2004, all French and Spanish majors, double majors,
and teaching licensure candidates are required to do an oral
proficiency assessment EXIT interview with one of the departments
OPI faculty examiners, before the end of the semester in which they
plan to graduate. Interviewees receive from the department an official
letter documenting the level of proficiency achieved on the ACTFL
OPI Scale. Arrangements for the interview should be made by contacting
the Modern Languages departmental administrative assistant, Ms. Dana
Frase, by e-mail
or by calling 330-972-7486.
- Details
and explanations of the OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) can be viewed
here .
- All
teaching licensure students currently also are required to do an oral
proficiency assessment ENTRANCE interview, for the purposes of placement.
The department is studying ways of extending this requirement to all
French and Spanish majors and double majors in the future.
- Minors
are offered in French and Spanish.
A minimum of 18 credits in the language is required for a minor.
These may include up to 6 credits of 201 and 202 taken for a grade.
12 or more credits must be taken at the 300- or 400- level.
A maximum of 6 bypass credits may be counted toward a minor
(as specified on page 172 of the 2005-2006 Undergraduate Bulletin).
- The
Department of Modern Languages also offers two years of Japanese and
Russian.
- The
Department hosts chapters of three National
Language Honor Societies.
- Language
