Modern Languages
The Department of Modern Languages of the University of Akron invites
applications for the position of Professor & Department Chair, effective
August 1, 2009. The initial term is for
four years. Ph.D. in subject area included within the department's area
of expertise-foreign languages-literatures-cultures required. In addition
to excellent communication and leadership skills, qualifications include
administrative experience, a record of scholarship, and successful teaching
sufficient to qualify for tenure at the rank of professor. All specializations
appropriate to the department will be considered, but some preference
will be given to specialists in Spanish language, literatures, and cultures.Responsibilities
encompass departmental governance, faculty development, undergraduate
and graduate program development, advocacy of the department's interests
within the university, and budgetary management.
The
chair will be expected to maintain an active scholarly agenda and to
teach their area of scholarly specialization. The college is currently
developing an academic initiative focused on Global Studies and the
Modern Languages Department will play a significant role in that effort.
The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications.
The
Department offers accredited BA programs in French and Spanish, as well
as beginning through advance course work in Arabic, Chinese, German,
Italian, Latin, Rusian, and Japanese. The
Department offers a Master's degree in Spanish as well as summer programs
in France and Spain. It is the recipient of the prestigious ACE Award
(American Council on education) for Foreign Language Teaching. The department
has a strong commitment to the development of oral proficiency, with
half of its full-time faculty being ACTFL OPI certified testers.
Department
faculty works in close cooperation with the University's College of
Education in Foreign Language certification. The department has 13 full-time
and approximately 25 part-time faculty members. See the department's
