Internet resources

[ UA resources ] - [ Media ] - [ Hispanic Research ] - [ Dictionaries etc. ]

At The University of Akron:

  • The Department of Modern Languages has a home page where you can find out about our programs, our faculty, etc.
  • A series of supplementary grammar explanations and exercises for Spanish 101 is now available online. Click here to connect to this resource. (new!)
  • The department's Language Resource Center (formerly the "language lab") has some tutorials, some copies of the Dos mundos CD-ROM, a great Spanish word processing program ("Atajo") with vocabulary and verb conjugations. You can find information about the LRC and useful links at the website but you must go there in person to use the programs on the computers there (Olin 375).
  • Go to the  Registrar's Office to find out about registration dates, your grades, etc.  Look up a course in the Schedule of Classes to find out what textbook will be used.
To read and listen to Spanish:
  • Read the news in Spanish at CNN en espaņol, the Spanish edition of the Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, or any of hundreds of other Spanish language online newspapers and magazines which you will find indexed in Mundo Latino's Kiosco de prensa (newsstand); select a country and click LEER to get links for that country.
  • Listen to the news (or music) in Spanish. First you'll need to download and install the free RealPlayer. CNN has news broadcasts in Spanish. Go to CNN Interactive, scroll all the way down and click on Audioselect. After the new page loads click on the link next to "CNN en espaņol" in the column under "Real."
  • To find radio stations which broadcast on the Internet go to The MIT List of Radio Stations on the Internet. Clicking on the links there will take you to a station's home page. Then look for a link which says something like "Live audio," "En vivo," "Escucha," or "Oiga." If you are asked whether to open the file or save it click on "Open."
To do research in Spanish or on Hispanic topics:
  • Find Websites throughout the Spanish-speaking world, in Spanish, at the Spanish version of Yahoo! At Yahoo!'s homepage scroll down to "World Yahoo's" and click on "Spanish" or go directly to Yahoo! en espaņol.
  • To do research about Spanish-speaking countries you can go to the Regional category in Yahoo!'s index and then to Countries and select Spain or any other country that interests you. Or from Regional go to Regions and then to Latin America.  The premier site for research about Latin America is the University of Texas Latin American Research Information Network (LANIC).
Dictionaries and lists of links to other resources:
Two sources for on-line dictionaries, in Spanish and many other languages, are:
A Web of On-line Dictionaries and
On-line Language Dictionaries and Translators.
I won't extend this list any further. Many other foreign language departments and teaching organizations have already published lists of favorite sites on the Web. Two of the best are:
Ohio University's CALL lab and
FL Teach WWW Resources.
The latter is an organization for language teachers but much of the information is very useful for learners too. The following sites are also worth exploring: Language Resources on the WWW
University of Toledo Foreign Languages Bookmarks
Coleman's Website for Hispanists.
Sheryl Coleman is a former director of our LRC. Those studying Spanish with Dos mundos might be interested in checking out McGraw-Hill's Dos mundos website. Students in 202 can find Internet links for topics in each chapter at the En contacto website.

The information in the page is provided for students of  Spanish at UA by the Spanish section. It is not an official page of the university and has not been approved by The University of Akron.
