Welcome to The University of Akron School of Music website!

Celebrate! Discover!

With more than 400 majors, we are one of the 50 largest public university schools of music in the United States. Our 27 full-time and 38 part-time faculty are dedicated to helping you discover your future in the many diverse fields of music. Our programs include bachelor degrees in music composition, education, performance, jazz studies, and history/literature. We also offer the Master of Music degree in composition, history/literature, performance, music education, technology and theory.

This is a special year for the school as we celebrate several milestones. First, we are now part of the new College of Creative and Professional Arts. The former College of Fine and Applied Arts has divided into two new units: CCPA with Art, Music, Dance/ Theatre/Arts Administration, and Communication; and the College of Health Sciences and Human Services that includes Family and Consumer Science, Speech Language Pathology and Audiology, and Social Work. Our new college organizations help to better focus the specialties in each of the seven schools. For those of you interested in music, you won’t find we have changed at all. We remain one of the best opportunities for you to explore your potential in the field of music.

2009-2010 marks the 30th anniversary of our Steel Band program. It also marks the 30th anniversary of Akron’s TubaChristmas and 10th anniversary of TubaSummer. In addition, we celebrate this year the 30th anniversary of the Jazz Band’s trip to the famous Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. The alumni from that group will return to campus in the spring during JazzFest 2010. And finally, we mark another new beginning this fall with the announcement of our quest to become an All-Steinway School. Look for more announcements about that special endeavor in the near future.
