Prospective Music Students FAQ's


Go to the web site (www.uakron.edu/music) and select your date for your audition. Choose Request Information. Or call the music office at 330.972.7590 to set up your audition date.
A written theory placement test, a Piano Proficiency, and an audition on your selected instrument(s). Read more detail below....
Given to assess your keyboard skills. If you have no keyboard skills, you will be placed in a beginning piano class.
Test will include: definitions of musical symbols and terms, recognition of note and rest values, knowledge of key signatures and scales and aural recognition of scale forms, rhythms and pitches.
Audition for the area of your choice. Study requirements for your applied area. You need to audition for only one applied area, but have the option of choosing more than one.
Solo from OMEA Class A list or equivalent, an etude or study of your choice, major scales and chromatic scales and sight-re4ading.(no accompanist provided or required).
Performance of composition selected from polyphonic keyboard literature, such as Baroque prelude and figure or a Bach two-part invention.
Major and minor scales, a Bach two-part invention or two movements from a suite or equivalent, a movement from a Classical sonatina or sonata and/or Romantic or Impressionistic solo and sight reading and accompanying.
Violin, viola, cello, double bass (no accompanist provided or required), Solo of your choice. Etude study of your choice, all majors and all minor scales.
Two memorized songs of your choice meeting OMEA Class A minimum standards and reflecting varying styles and character. Tone recognition and melodic retention. (an accompanist will be provided if you need one)
Sight-reading, facility to play major and minor scales, knowledge of major and minor chords and performances of prepared jazz or classical guitar solo pieces.
Clear tone production, both rest and free strokes, major scales-two octaves:, two pieces of a contrasting nature (Sor, Estudio: Dowland, and dance; Tarrega, Prelude, etc): Sight reading.
Solo from OMEA Class A list or equivalent (Example: 2040 Sortie by Alan Abel), sight reading.
