President
Beth Feuerstein is in her third year at Akron U. She is persuing a degree in music education
with flute as her applied instrument. Beth is also involved in Akron's chapter of OCMEA as vice president/president
elect. The ensembles she is a part of include the University of Akron marching band, symphonic band, flute choir,
and the woodwind quintet "Chicas con Pantalones". Beth is looking forward to working with the highly respected
George Pope and Jane Berkner and also her fellow hardworking officers to make this year a memorable one for NEOFA members.
Vice President
Amy Hansen is a junior at the University of Akron studying Music Performance under the direction of
Professor George Pope. Miss Hansen graduated from Hudson High School in 2000. While in high school, Amy performed in the pit
orchestras for school musicals, the school concert band, and in the Akron Youth Symphony. In 2000, the Akron Youth Symphony
awarded her with the Senior Scholarship toward collegiate studies in music. Miss Hansen attended The Ohio State University for
Music Performance to study under Katherine Borst Jones. While at OSU, Amy performed with the chamber ensemble The Diminished Dozen
as well as the OSU Flute Troupe. Miss Hansen began her musical studies with Mr. Pope at the University of Akron in 2002.
Miss Hansen is an active member in FlutrAUma, the University's Symphonic Band, and the University Symphony Orchestra. She is
also the Vice President, President-elect of the NorthEastern Ohio Flute Association. She has performed in many master classes; her
latest with Robert Dick at UA in October. Miss Hansen was the recipient of the Louis A. Klages Memorial Scholarship for the
2003-04 school year for academic excellence and currently carries a 3.9 GPA. Miss Hansen has also studied under Dr. Julie
Micheletti of Hudson, and Natalie Zimmerman.
Treasurer
Melissa Chapin is a junior Music Education major at The University of Akron, with flute
being her applied instrument. She is currently a member of the University of Akron Symphonic Band; Marching Band, where
she serves as section leader; the Ohio Collegiate Music Education Association, where she serves as Sectratary; and the Northeastern
Ohio Flute Association, as the treasurer. Melissa is also an active musician at her church, Word of His Grace Fellowship in Cuyahoga Falls.
Corresponding Secretary
Katie Patterson is currently a Masters in Music student in flute performance at the University of
Akron where she studies with George Pope. While at the University of Akron, Mrs. Patterson has performed as both principal and second
flutist in the University Orchestra, the Symphonic Band and the University of Akron Flute Ensemble "FlutrAUma".
Mrs. Patterson has a Bachelor of Music in flute performance from Samford University in Birmingham, AL,
where she studied with Lisa Wienhold. While at Samford, Katie performed with the University Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, Wind Ensemble,
Woodwind Quintet and Flute Choir. She served three years as Principal Flutist of the Orchestras and four years as Section Leader /
Principal flute in the Wind Ensemble.
Former teachers of Mrs. Patterson are Mary Kay Ferguson, Rebecca Remley and Karla Roberts and coaching
with Carol Wincenc, Marlene Eberhart and Victoria Delano.
Katie maintains a private teaching studio and is currently the flute instructor for Nordonia Hills City
Schools in Macedonia, OH and Garfield High School in Garrettsville, OH. She is also a member of the Greater Cleveland Flute Society and
National Flute Association.
Recording Secretary
Elizabeth Rome is in her third year at The University of Akron, working towards a degree in Music
Education. She is from Mentor, OH and a graduate of Mentor High School. She has participated in the Marching Band, Concert Band,
Flute Choir, University Singers, the Honors Program, and Alpha Phi International Fraternity in her college career. She has studied
flute with both Jane Berkner and George Pope since attending UA. This is her second year serving as the Recording Secretary for NEOFA,
she also is the Vice President of Chapter Operations in Alpha Phi.
