OTHER HELPFUL MODEM TIPS

ALL Windows 95 users should upgrade to Dial-Up Networking Version 1.3 (DUN 1.3).
This can be downloaded from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/default.asp

For Problems connecting above 28.8Kbps:
Use 3-Com's 56K Line Test BBS. Instructions can be found at
http://www.3com.com/56k/need4_56k/linetest.html.
Use Hyperterminal to connect "Direct to ComX"
Type "ati7" without the quotation marks.
Be sure that V.90 is listed under options, if not,
the modem will have to be flashed with a V.90 upgrade from the vendor.

Authentication is too slow:
Remove all network protocols other then TCP/IP.
Under Dial-up Networking -> Properties -> Server Types
Verify that all advanced options are NOT checked.
Verify that the only allowed network protocol is TCP/IP.

I can not authenticate:
Verify that their ZipNet ID and password are correct.
CAPS LOCK on?
Under Dial-up Networking -> Properties -> General -> Modem Configure -> Connection -> Call Preferences
Be sure that "Cancel call if not connected within X seconds" is not checked.

Dropped Connections:
Is call waiting being deactivated? *70
Is someone else in your home picking up the extension to see if you are on-line?
Do you hear crackling, hissing, popping, or humming on the line during a "voice" call? If so, call your phone company.
Under Dial-up Networking -> Properties -> General -> Modem Configure -> Connection -> Call Preferences
Be sure that "Cancel call if not connected within X seconds" is not checked.
Be sure that "Disconnect a call if idle for more than X seconds is not checked.
Under Dial-up Networking -> Properties -> General -> Modem Configure -> Connection -> Advanced -> Extra Settings
Type "S10=50" (without the quotation marks).
This setting forces your modem to remain online for as long as
five seconds without being connected to a carrier, which often
gives the modem enough time to reestablish the connection.

Use Hyperterminal to connect "Direct to ComX"
Type "ati6" without the quotation marks.
Most modems will list the reason why the last call was disconnected.
