Observations on Picasso’s Self-Portrait, "Facing Death"
by Chris Hloros

The feeling I think Picasso was trying to represent in this was that of sadness and depression. There are many clues. First off, the colors used in the painting are not bright. They are very dull and dreary, creating a mood of sadness and mystery. The blue gives you the feeling that this man is very unhappy with his life, and the green is a sickly color, making me think that this man is not in the best of health---maybe even in the last stages of his life about to die. The red in the eyes makes them seem bloodshot. This may be from insomnia, possibly because of a horrific nightmare. His hair is also red, perhaps symbolizing blood or death on his mind. These colors truly add feeling to this painting.

One thing that was very apparent to me was the shape of teardrops used throughout the face. Picasso used a particularly large one that seemed to be in the center of the picture. This hints to unhappiness, possibly even a trauma that may have caused many tears to flow. Also, the nose is in the form of a teardrop, and the eyes are almost teardrop shaped, creating a feeling of great sadness and depression.
