I visualize the book as a series of scenes rather as if I were shooting a film. These can be written in any order depending on how I am feeling at the time. Some mornings I am attracted to dialogue, perhaps to scenes where my detective is interviewing suspects and there is the cut and thrust of verbal confrontation. On others, I draft descriptions of people, setting, scenery, weather, atmosphere, while sometimes I feel in the mood to tackle passages of violent action or horror.
