Strategy 1: Paint the Personality Behind the Clothes

In the corner of the room hang two sets of clothes: one representing a man and one representing a woman. Ask the class to imagine what type of individuals wore these clothes. Have them picture their personalities, occupations, and social lives. Did they know each other? Were they friends, enemies, or just acquaintances? After brainstorming aloud or silently, have students write a description or a story about one or both imaginary individuals. (If you don't have some interesting clothes around the house, consider purchasing a few items at a Goodwill store or borrowing a few things from the local theatre costume collection.)
