Divide the class into teams of four or five. Explain that they are going to create a "shooting script"---short descriptions of scenes that could be used by a photograph to film a documentary. Instruct each team to go on location to a place in the school they feel might be interesting---the cafeteria, the gym, a science lab, a band room, a sporting event---and write a series of short descriptions of scenes they feel would work well in a film featuring school life.
Before students write, have teams share their thoughts on possibilities for close-up shots, shots from interesting perspectives and of interesting details that might captivate the viewer's attention. Also, ask teams to discuss what images would best convey the impression they want to communicate.
After teams develop their "shooting scripts," ask members to review each other's work and select a few highlights to share with the class. As a bonus assignment, you may want to invite those teams who have exceptional scripts to film their scenes with commentary.
