Strategy 8: Paint a Setting with a List

Ask students to select a setting they perceive as crowded with people and objects. Using a list as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Norman Mailer did in the passages shown in the text, have students describe the setting. To motivate their thinking, you might suggest a few settings, such as a cafeteria, a dance, the lobby of a movie theatre, a well-attended sporting event, an art show, a concert hall, a dress shop, or a coffee shop/bookstore.
