Strategy 5: Do Your Own Edgar Allan Humpty
Ask the elementary librarian in your school system to loan you thirty well-known children's books. After sharing the Red Riding Hood and Edgar Allen Poe parodies quoted earlier, have students select a children's book such as The Three Bears, Snow White, or Cinderella, and rewrite a portion of it in a totally different voice. They might try writing it in the voice of an evening news broadcaster, a sports commentator, an author you are reading in class, or perhaps in the voice of a popular celebrity with an accent.
