Explain to the class that they will be participating in a simulated television sports show. This show gives news on breaking events but with comments and opinions by the sports commentators. The task of each commentator will be to research and create a commentary on some interesting sporting event in the news.
The only requirement of their commentaries will be to include a hyperbole. (Review the samples presented earlier in this chapter.) Ask students to search for information from any of these three sources: (1) magazines from the library or home, (2) sports articles in the evening newspaper, or (3) the Internet sources listed here:
Once students have written their commentaries, conduct a "live" sports show in a mock news studio at the front of the classroom.
If you have a colorful local sports reporter who does commentary, videotape a few of his or her broadcasts to use as warm-up models.
