This strategy is designed to help students understand the logical structure found in most expository paragraphs and themes. Assign students the task of collecting print, audio, and video ads on a popular product. (So items can be shared, limit the class to a list of nine or ten frequently advertised products, such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Nike, Taco Bell, Microsoft, IBM, Wendy's, Ford, and Nike.) Assemble all the print ads on tables by product.
As a class, draw some conclusions about the advertising campaign. You might discuss the target audience, the product image, and the false conclusions used by advertisers to lure the audience into accepting as true. In addition, spend a day showing students videos of advertisements on each product.
Afterward, have students write an essay with a thesis relating to one of the ad campaigns. As an option, you might challenge students to imagine that they are from another planet and that the collected advertisements represent the only data they have about the inhabitants of Earth. What conclusions might an alien reach, and what examples from various ads would support those conclusions?
