May 1-31 - Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Monument – Cleveland Museum of Natural History
Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology Joe Hannibal and Curator of Mineralogy Dr. David Saja contributed their expertise to the rehabilitation of the 116-year-old Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, located on Public Square in downtown Cleveland. Hannibal and Saja investigated the warping of the large marble tablets in the Monument that contain the names of County soldiers and sailors who served in the American Civil War.  Free with museum admission. (Through 31 March 2012)

May 1-31 – Soul Soldiers: African-Americans and the Vietnam Era – Western Reserve Historical Society
This exhibit explores the issues, actions, reactions and expressions of life and culture of African Americans as they were impacted by Civil Rights and the war in Vietnam.  Running now through June 5.  For more information, call 216-721-5722.

May 1-31 – Rally ‘Round the Flag – Western Reserve Historical Society
Exhibit contains approximately 25 historically important flags and banners from the Civil War era. They document the entire spectrum of the war: the anti-slavery movement, regimental colors, a progression of United States flags, captured Confederate flags, and postwar patriotic organizations including the Grand Army of the Republic. The most spectacular display is two massive 18’ flags of the Union Jack and the Confederate Stars and Bars. The exhibit also includes swords, playing cards, banners and pins, and items handmade by Civil War soldiers.  Running throughout the summer.  For more information, call 216-721-5722.


May 5 – Lecture: The Amazing Story of Charles Goodyear and the Early Rubber Industry – Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens
6pm in the Music Room, FREE.  Collector Mike Woshner gives a fascinating talk on the history of rubber, the discovery by Charles Goodyear of vulcanized rubber and how this now useful material was used not only for Civil War knapsacks, haversacks, canteens, and cartridge belts, but also in non-military articles of the period like boots, shoes, buckets, and life preserver belts.  For more information, call 330-836-5533.

May 14 – Tea with Mrs. Taft – Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens
11am- 1pm in the Corbin Conservatory.  Back by popular demand is Tea with Taft. Travel back in time and meet Nellie Taft over tea and learn more about this remarkable woman and wife of our 27th president. Reservations required.  For more information, call 330-836-5533.

This summer, join Museum archaeologists as they return to the Heckleman site, a prehistoric Native American settlement near Milan in Erie County, Ohio. Members may sign up for one to five weeks. No experience is necessary. Minimum age is 17. Weekly Sessions: Mondays through Fridays, June 13 to July 15; 8:30 am to 4 pm each day, rain or shine.  Members: $200 per week; nonmembers: $200 plus $55 membership fee.

June 18 & 25 – Abraham Lincoln Campaign Trail – Hale Farm and Village

June 24-25 – Authentic Civil War Music with Bobby Horton – Summit County Historical Society
Mr. Horton has produced and performed music scores for 13 PBS films by Ken Burns, including The Civil War and The National Parks: America's Best Idea. He has recorded fourteen volumes of authentic Civil War tunes in his home studio, playing all of the period era instruments and singing all the parts himself. His series of recordings has been acclaimed by historical organizations and publications throughout the United States and Europe, and he is widely recognized as one the country's leading authorities of music from the Civil War period.  Call 330-535-1120 for more information.
