The College of Nursing holds several annual events that help to reinforce our commitment to Excellence, Diversity, & Unity.  These events are time-honored traditions and have helped to bring together educators, current and prospective students, and alumni for events that demonstrate our commitment to quality in nursing education.  We are very proud of our traditions and invite you to take a few moments to learn a little more about some of them.

Distinguished Lecture Series

Each year, during the spring, the College of Nursing invites a scholar to visit and deliver some comments to our faculty, staff, students, and alumni of the CON and the University.  In April of 2008, the speaker for the Distinguished Lecture will be Susan E. Hankinson, ScD, MPH, RN.  Susan is an associate professor in the Department of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and in the Department of Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health

Susan Hankinson worked as a staff nurse for five years after earning a B.S.N. at the University of Southern Maine. As rewarding as that experience was, she found that she enjoyed research, particularly in the area of disease prevention, and so turned to a career in public health. She went on to earn master’s degrees in environmental health and epi-demiology at the University of Minnesota, and a doctorate in epidemiology at Harvard University.

She is a long-term investigator – and current principal investigator – with the Nurses’ Health Study, a landmark study that has been ongoing since 1976. More than 120,000 nurses were initially enrolled, and they have contributed tremendously to our understanding of how to maintain good health and prevent disease in women.

Hankinson’s research addresses the role of endogenous hormones in the etiology and prediction of breast and ovarian cancers in women, including determining the lifestyle and genetic factors that influence hormone levels. This focus reflects a broad interest in the application of biomarkers in epidemiologic research. The longtime researcher has more than 300 peer-reviewed publications to her credit, and has served on a range of national and international committees, including several editorial boards and NIH study sections. In addition, she has mentored numerous pre- and postdoctoral researchers.
