What is so special about the Nursing Program at the University of Akron?

The purpose of the program is to prepare a beginning level professional nurse who can assume employment as a staff nurse in a hospital, health department, visiting nurse service, skilled nursing facility or the like. In order to provide the type of care needed, graduates of the program are taught to utilize knowledge from natural, social, behavioral and nursing sciences when determining what care is needed, providing that care, and evaluating its effectiveness.

Our faculty members strive to create an academic environment of  learning experiences tailored to meet ones needs. All instruction emphasizes the need for one to become a critical  thinker and decision maker. Faculty from the College of Nursing guide and supervise students in the clinical settings. Nursing staff from the various agencies also serve as guides to the students. In the senior year there is an opportunity for a preceptorship-type experience where students work with a preceptor (tutor) in an area of choice. This experience will ease the transition from student to new graduate.

All of the College's classrooms, offices, lounges, and study areas are housed under one roof to increase interaction between students and faculty.  The building also houses the Learning Resources Center and the Center for Nursing clinic, further establishing it as the focal point for study and learning

The College of Nursing utilizes many area health care agencies to give students a realistic and diverse educational experience.
