Career Pathways for the Registered Nurse

The University of Akron College of Nursing offers two career pathways to meet the needs of registered nurses who are interested in obtaining either the baccalaureate or masters degree in nursing. The sequences are designed for RNs who completed either a diploma or associate degree nursing program as well as RNs with bachelor degrees in an area other than nursing. Both pathways provide learning activities that build on prior knowledge and experience.

RN Education: The RN to BSN Option

The RN/BSN sequence is designed for nurses who wish to obtain a baccalaureate degree in nursing. The program itself, after completion of the prerequisites, is three full-time semesters. A part-time option is available.

The RN Advancement Program: The RN to MSN Option

The RN/MSN option is designed for the experienced nurse who wishes to go on to graduate study to prepare for advance nursing practice roles such as clinical nurse specialist, nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, or nurse administrator. In this program, students take courses that meet the requirements of the baccalaureate degree as well as graduate nursing courses. Upon completion of the baccalaureate course requirements, the baccalaureate degree is awarded.

Students then continue in their chosen specialty area at the master’s level. The entire RN/MSN option program, after completion of the prerequisite courses, is seven to eight full- time semesters. A part-time program of study is available.

If you are interested in applying for this program and have any questions, Dr. Marlene Huff, the coordinator of the RN option, is available to contact for assistance.

Admission requirements include:

  • Valid Ohio state license as a registered nurse

  • Admission to the University of Akron and College of Nursing

  • Maintenance of a "C" or above in all prerequisite courses. Courses taken at other colleges may be used to receive credit towards prerequisite requirements.

  • A minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0. Grades of transfer work are combined with those earned at The University of Akron in the computation of the admission GPA.

All RN students are admitted directly to the College of Nursing as undergraduates. College of Nursing advisors will help guide the student as to the prerequisite courses needed and a plan of study that will best meet the student’s needs.

The College of Nursing is concerned with the shortage of nurses of diverse cultures in the field. If you are interested in nursing, we strongly encourage you to apply.
