Applications for College of Nursing Scholarships are taken in the following ways (unless otherwise noted in the individual scholarship information):

  • All College of Nursing students must submit their applications on the web during the open scholarship application period each Spring.  Check with the Office of Student Affairs (330-972-5103) for specific dates when scholarship applications will be accepted.  This includes ALL students currently in ALL levels of the nursing major as well as ALL prenursing students not yet in the major.

Using the link below, you will:

    • Sign in with your UAnet ID & password.
    • Answer ALL the application questions carefully & click “Up-date profile.”
    • Your status in the college NEXT FALL & your previous cumulative GPA will determine the scholarships you are eligible for & you will be presented with your list of scholarships.  Please note the following instructions for special circumstances:
      • Prenursing RNs who will be in the nursing major by fall should select “Nursing Senior” & also check “RN”
      • Prenursing LPNs who will be in the nursing major by fall should select “Nursing Junior” & also check “LPN”
      • Prenursing Accelerated BSN students who will be in the nursing major by fall should select “Nursing Junior”
      • Prenursing basic BSN candidates applying for a seat in the nursing major should select “Nursing Sophomore”
    • This computerized application system will SAVE your profile & your application information, so that you will not need to continually retype everything for each scholarship you decide to apply for. 
    • Click on a scholarship and you will be shown the specific scholarship criteria & be provided fields in which to list honors/awards & explain why you are a worthy candidate.  Complete the application & submit.
    • You may then return to the scholarship list & apply for another scholarship if you so choose.  The program automatically will display in the bottom panel the applications that you have already submitted & the date you submitted it.  You may work on these applications a little at a time and not lose information.  But once you “Submit” an application you cannot go back to it.
    • With each subsequent application, make sure you adapt your short essay to address the specific criteria for that scholarship.  This will increase the likelihood of serious consideration for that award.
       
  • Incoming freshmen being directly admitted to the College of Nursing should indicate “Nursing Scholarships” on the university scholarship form.  The Financial Aid office will forward copies of your scholarship application materials to the College of Nursing.  You should then follow the university application with your application essay which should include information about yourself, your interest in nursing and why you are an appropriate recipient for these funds.  Send your essay to the College of Nursing Office of Student Affairs, Akron OH 44325-3701.  Essay deadline is February 1st.
  • Incoming RNs and Accelerated Students entering the nursing major in May but not yet admitted to UA’s College of Nursing will be provided with special instructions at their College of Nursing Orientation Session.  This group of students will have an extended application period with dates announced at orientation.
  • Intended nursing majors still in University College are NOT eligible for College of Nursing scholarships until admitted into the nursing major.

Scholarship awards are normally announced in June or July and may vary in amounts.  Due to the huge volume of applications, notices to students NOT receiving a scholarship cannot be sent.


 



Below is a comprehensive listing of all scholarships designated to support students majoring in nursing at The University of Akron.  Particular criteria for each scholarship is underlined in the scholarship history and description.  Students wishing to be awarded scholarship support must address these criteria in their essay application.  Unless otherwise noted, the College of Nursing faculty serving on the Student Affairs Committee select the scholarship recipients.

 Scholarship Descriptions

The Akron City Hospital’s School of Nursing Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship Fund --- $$
This scholarship was established in 1999 by the Alumni Association of Akron City Hospital’s School of Nursing in the hope of continuing the school’s legacy of academic excellence and community service.  The Alumni Association has long recognized the importance of higher education in the nursing profession.  Therefore this scholarship is awarded to either an undergraduate or a graduate student in nursing according to academic merit and financial need.  The student must maintain the minimum GPA required in their program and be enrolled either on a full or part-time basis.  Preference is given to graduates of Akron City Hospital’s School of Nursing but other nursing students are encouraged to apply.

The Charles R. and Janice L. Barton Scholarship for Students in the Graduate Nurse Anesthesia Program --- $-$$
This scholarship was established in 2001 through the generosity of Mr. Charles R. and Mrs. Janice L. Barton.  It is awarded to graduate students pursuing a degree in the Graduate Nurse Anesthesia Program based on financial need and scholastic achievement.  Recipients are chosen by the Director of the Graduate Nurse Anesthesia Program.

The Beatrice P. Radabaugh Bischoff Nursing Award---$$$
This fund was established in 2006 by the family of Mrs. Bischoff to honor the 70th anniversary of her graduation from nursing school and Beatrice’s dedication to the healthcare profession  This scholarship is to be used in support of a nursing student who is either a first generation college student and/or has a great financial need.  The award is given to an undergraduate senior in the College of Nursing.  The recipient will be selected by the Office of Student Affairs.

The Charles V. Bowen, Jr. Memorial Scholarship---$$$
This memorial scholarship was established in 1990 by Molly Bowen and the Summit County Medical Society in memory of Dr. Charles V. Bowen, Jr., devoted husband and dedicated physician in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.   This scholarship is awarded to a nursing student who has expressed an interest in critical care nursing.   The student must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or graduate GPA of 3.0 and must demonstrate financial need.

The Carol A. Brodbeck Nursing Scholarship---$$$
This fund was established in 2006 by the family of Carol A. Brodbeck following her untimely death in August 2006 to honor Carol’s passion and love of life, and her dedication, knowledge, and compassion in the nursing profession.  This scholarship is to be used in support of a student in the accelerated nursing program. Carol Brodbeck worked in the medical system for more than 35 years.  She helped establish home care for diabetics while working for Visiting Nurse Service and she directed the accelerated nursing program at The University of Akron.  The award is given to a student currently enrolled in the accelerated BSN nursing program.  Recipients are selected based on their involvement in the profession, demonstration of nursing values, and contributions to the community.  Recipients will be selected by the Office of Student Affairs in the College of Nursing in collaboration with the Brodbeck family.

The Gary S. Calogar Memorial Scholarship---$$$$$$
This scholarship was established in 1993 by the family of Gary S. Calogar (BSN ’84) in his memory.  Gary had worked as a cardiothoracic nurse clinician.  The recipients of his scholarship are selected on the basis of need and the personal qualities associated with the exceptional nursing student.  It is awarded to a student entering the sophomore class and can be renewed annually if the recipient maintains a 2.5 GPA and follows the normal course of study.  Applications will next be considered for incoming sophomores fall semester 2005.

The Cameos of Caring Endowed Scholarship---$$$$$$
This scholarship was established in 2002 from funds raised at a regional event designed to help retain current nurses and recruit new nursing students to the profession.  The Cameos of Caring event enhances the image of nursing by publicly honoring outstanding nurses.   Initiated by Dean Cynthia Flynn Capers, The University of Akron’s College of Nursing was joined by Johnson & Johnson (Presenting Sponsor), Akron General Medical Center, Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Akron and Summa Health System (Co-Sponsoring Hospitals), and Barberton Citizens Hospital and Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital (participating hospitals).  This scholarship is awarded to deserving and qualified freshmen who are “Direct Admits” and/or “Presidential Scholars,” as well as RNs or LPNs working toward the BSN degree.  Once an applicant has been awarded the scholarship, they can be assured of continued financial assistance each year providing they maintain themselves in good standing.

The Lillian DeYoung Scholarship to Promote Nursing---$$$
This scholarship was originally established with a gift from the Class of 1988 to honor Dr. Lillian J. DeYoung upon her retirement as Dean.  Subsequent gifts to the scholarship fund were anticipated from the Collegiate Nursing Club and Dr. DeYoung.  Dr. DeYoung was the second Dean of the College of Nursing, serving from 1975 to 1988.   This scholarship is awarded to senior nursing students who have a minimum GPA of 3.4 and who demonstrate financial need.

The Mary DiDonato Nursing Scholarship---$$$
This scholarship was established in 2007 by Mary DiDonato, a dedicated oncology nurse with 37 years of service, to recognize excellence in nursing practice.  Recipients will be an undergraduate nursing student dedicated to the profession of nursing, demonstrating the values of the profession, and involved in volunteerism.

The Arthur Dobkin Nursing Scholarship---$$$
This scholarship was established in 1988 by Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Dobkin.  Dr. Dobkin served as the first vice chairman of the College of Nursing’s Advancement Council, was a 1928 graduate of The University of Akron and a practicing physician for over 50 years.  He provided wise counsel and insight for the college from the perspective of a physician as well as provided personal financial support and tireless efforts at generating further financial resources.  This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate or graduate students to support their pursuit of nursing careers.

The Clara D. Dye Nursing Fund---$$$
This fund was originally established in 1953 as a student scholarship at People’s Hospital - now known as Akron General Medical Center - for students in their School of Nursing.  When the school closed, the responsibility for this scholarship was transferred in 1984 to the College of Nursing at The University of Akron.  As was stipulated in Clara Dye’s will, the money is distributed primarily on the basis of need rather than academic standing.

The Ann Van Blaricom Falor Scholarship in Nursing---$$$$
This scholarship was established in 1976 by William H. Falor, MD, in honor of his wife, Ann Van Blaricom Falor.  It is awarded to an academically talented junior in the College of Nursing.  The awardee may request a renewal of the scholarship for their senior year based on continued academic merit.

The Edward W. and Florence A. Fitzgerald Scholarship---$$
This scholarship was established in 1994 by Dr. Phyllis A. Fitzgerald, Assistant Dean and Associate Professor for the College of Nursing to honor her parents, Edward W. and Florence A. Fitzgerald, who supported her when she initially entered the field of nursing.  Her parents had always been advocates for higher education and her father was a teacher for 37 years in a public school system until his death in 1964.  This scholarship is awarded to nursing students with GPAs between a 2.7 and 2.9.

The Michael and Pauline Forster Scholarship Fund---$$$
This scholarship, established in 1998 in memory of Michael and Pauline Forster by their children, seeks to provide financial support to students in the physical sciences and the College of Nursing.  Michael Forster had a PhD in physics from Notre Dame (1951) specializing in polymer research.  Pauline Forster was an RN (Meyer Memorial, 1945) who worked in the areas of public health, newborn nursery and surgical medicine.  This scholarship rotates every two years, between the College of Polymer Engineering and the College of Nursing.  It is to be awarded on the basis of financial need and academic merit.  New nursing applications will next be considered for this scholarship for fall 2007 & 2008.

The Helene Fuld Health Trust---$$$$$
The Helene Fuld Health Trust is the nation’s largest private funder devoted to nursing and nursing education.  The fund was created in 1935 by Dr. Leonard Felix Fuld and his sister, Florentine, in honor of their mother Helene dedicated to “the relief of poverty, suffering, sickness and distress.”  In 1961, Dr. Fuld limited the focus to “the improvement of the health and welfare of student nurses.”  The Helene Fuld Trust understands the needs of our increasingly complex health care system and the demand for nurses with higher levels of knowledge and skill to render safe patient centered care and their mission.  Junior, senior and Accelerated option recipients are selected based on their academic record, commitment to nursing as a career, and potential as a future leader in nursingThose receiving this award are asked to provide a testimonial of how this scholarship assists the recipient personally and professionally.

Edward Gibney Memorial Scholarship---$$$
This scholarship was established in 1992 in memory of Edward Gibney by the graduating class of May 1987.   Contributions were received from faculty, alumni, students, and close friend, Jerry P. Burrell.  The award will go to a senior student who was outstanding academically in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing at the junior level.  The selection is made by the mental health faculty in the college.

The Kristine and Richard Gill Scholarship---$$$
This scholarship was established in 1985 by Kristine M. and Richard A. Gill for deserving undergraduates enrolled in the College of Nursing.  The student selected for this award must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 and demonstrate financial need.

The Gill Family Minority Scholarship---$$$
This scholarship was established in 1994 by Kristine M. and Richard A. Gill to recognize the importance of culturally diverse nurses in our society.  It is to be awarded to a deserving minority undergraduate enrolled in the College of Nursing; preference will be given to African Americans.  The student must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 and demonstrate financial need.  It is renewable based on continuing qualification.

The Gill Family Graduate Nursing Scholarship---$$$
This scholarship was established in 1988 by Kristine M., a 1981 College of Nursing graduate, and Richard A. Gill.  Preference will be given to graduate students in either the pediatric, maternal, or child adolescent program, however the award is not limited to this area.  Students studying administration, education, or clinical specialization are also encouraged to apply.  The student receiving this award must have a minimum GPA of 3.25 and demonstrate both merit and need.

The Gill Family Doctoral Scholarship---$$$
This scholarship was established in 1999 by Kristine M. and Richard A. Gill to recognize the efforts of The University of Akron College of Nursing Deans (Lillian J. DeYoung, E. Jane Martin, V. Ruth Gray, and Cynthia Flynn Capers) and countless faculty in establishing the Joint PhD in Nursing with Kent State University.  It is awarded to a deserving doctoral nursing student who demonstrates financial need.  The recipient of this scholarship is selected by the Coordinator of the Joint Ph.D. Program.

The Dean V. Ruth Gray Scholarship in Nursing---$$
This scholarship was established in 1993 by Dr. V. Ruth Gray and Mr. William A. Gray.  Dr. Gray was the 4th Dean of the College of Nursing and brought to her position the required compassion, creativity and strong belief in nursing education.  Recipients may be graduate or undergraduate students in the College of Nursing with a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Final selection is based on merit and financial need.  This award has traditionally been split between an anesthesia student (graduate) and a general nursing student (undergraduate).  The Director of the Graduate Anesthesia Program selects the anesthesia student.

The Michael T. Hayes College of Nursing Scholarship---$$$-$$$$
This scholarship was established in 2003 by Michael T. Hayes to support a 2003 graduating senior from Akron East High School intending to major in nursing at The University of Akron.  The scholarship is renewable and financial support will increase each year as the student progresses through the curriculum.  The student selected for this award must have a minimum 2.75 GPA, an ACT minimum composite score of 20 or SAT of 950, unconditional acceptance at The University of Akron and the student must submit to a brief interview with the sponsor.  An essay and two letters of recommendation must accompany application materials as well.  Details of the application process are coordinated by the 12th grade counselor at the high school.

The Joan Mann Heminger Memorial Scholarship in Nursing---$$$
Established in 2004 by Joan Mann Heminger ‘s daughter as a tribute to her dedication to nursing.  She was a graduate of Akron City Hospital’s School of Nursing, served as faculty there, and also was president of their Alumni Association.  Preference for this scholarship is given to a graduate of Coventry High School in the College of Nursing, maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.5 and who demonstrates financial need.

The David J. Johnson Scholarship Fund---$
This scholarship was established in 1976 through the estate of Myrtle A. Johnson, Class of 1913, in memory of her husband to provide support for an undergraduate in the College of Nursing.  This scholarship is currently designated as a Direct Admit Scholarship and is awarded to outstanding prenursing students in the college.

The Dorothy Kidney Memorial Scholarship Fund---$
This scholarship was established in 1980 by family and friends of Dorothy Kidney, devoted wife of Robert Kidney, past member and chairman of the Board of Trustees of The University of Akron to provide support for undergraduate students in the College of Nursing.  This scholarship is currently designated as a Direct Admit Scholarship and is awarded to outstanding prenursing students in the college.

The Frances M. Kramer Senior Enrichment Award---$
This award was established by Frances M. Kramer in 2002 to provide a senior graduate students in the Graduate Anesthesia Program with support in preparation for the National Certifying Examination.  The Associate Director of the Graduate Anesthesia Program will manage the award process.

The Hattie Larlham Foundation Endowed Scholarship---$
This scholarship was established in 1999 by the Hattie Larlham Foundation to honor Hattie Larlham.  Hattie Larlham was a nurse who contributed to children and the nursing profession through her care and assistance to children and young adults with disabilities.  Students receiving this award must be full-time juniors or seniors in the College of Nursing and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Selection will be based on need and merit.  The student should exhibit the qualities of compassion, creativity and strong leadership.   The recipient is chosen by a representative of the Hattie Larlham Foundation and will be invited to visit Hattie Larlham as part of their scholarship recognition.

The Laura Murie Leafgren Nursing Scholarship---$$$
This fund was established in 2006 by a gift from Judge Harold F. and Jeannette White in honor of Jeannette’s sister, Laura.  Laura was a life-long nurse who was loyal in her calling to serve others.  Laura Leafgren showed her dedication to the field of nursing serving as Director of Nursing Education at Akron General and Director of Student Education at Fallsview.  She also spent a year working for Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem.  While working for the VA Hospital she became known as a strong advocate for her patients.  This scholarship is to be used in support of junior or senior nursing students who exhibit a strong dedication to pursing a career in the healthcare profession.  Recipients will be selected by the Office of Student Affairs in the College of Nursing.

The Ethel and Lois Leuchtag Endowed Scholarship in Nursing---$$
This scholarship was established in 1997 by Dr. Harry Leuchtag in loving memory of his mother, Ethel, and his wife, Lois to provide assistance for deserving undergraduate students in the College of Nursing.  Dr. Harry Leuchtag received the University’s Honorary Alumni Award in 1996 in recognition of his devotion to the medical field and higher education.  This scholarship is currently designated as a Direct Admit Scholarship and is awarded to outstanding prenursing students in the college.

The Mr. and Mrs. Frank P. McMorrow Nursing Scholarship---$$-$$$
This scholarship was established in 1988 through the assets of the F. P. McMorrow Educational Trust to provide assistance to undergraduate or graduate nursing students.  Qualifying students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 (undergraduate) or 3.0 (graduate) and must demonstrate financial need.  The McMorrow’s request preference be given to students of very modest means and very average grade point averages, not to exceed 3.5.

The R.C. Musson & Katharine Musson Scholarship Fund for Nursing Students---$$$
This scholarship was established in 2006 through a gift from the Musson Foundation.  Students receiving this aid must be enrolled in the BSN track.

The Ohio State Firefighters’ Nursing Foundation Scholarship---$$$$$
This scholarship was established in 2002 by The Ohio State Firefighters’ Nursing Foundation, Inc. to benefit students wishing to obtain a nursing education.  Recipients must have been Ohio residents for at least 3 years before applying for funding and must be in at least their second year in the College of Nursing.  Selection is based on financial need, scholastic aptitude, academic achievement, and personality.  Students receiving this award will be asked to submit a photo for inclusion in a publication sponsored by the Ohio State Firefighters’ Nursing Foundation.

The Jack W. Peckham Memorial Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established in 2001 by Marie J. Peckham to honor her husband of 44 years, Jack, a former Marine, retired Electrical Design Engineer from Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, and an active citizen in his community.  This scholarship was also created to honor the nursing profession.  While ill, Jack was cared for by many fine and compassionate nurses who provided support and guidance for Jack and his family.  The recipient of this scholarship shall be an undergraduate student in the College of Nursing with a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Applications are not yet being taken for this scholarship.

The Sisler-McFawn Graduate Nursing Scholarship---$$$$
This scholarship was established in 1988 to honor a graduate student in Family Health Nursing.  The recipient must demonstrate financial need, have a minimum GPA of 3.25 and have successfully completed one semester of graduate study.

The Summit County Medical Alliance Endowed Nursing Scholarship---$$$
This scholarship was established in1987 by the Summit County Medical Society Auxiliary to provide support for a diploma RN in the College of Nursing.  Having provided support in earlier years to students in nursing diploma programs, it was the society’s desire to encourage these nurses to stay in the profession and pursue the BSN.  Currently, the Alliance wishes to support full-time undergraduate or graduate nursing students who are Summit County residents and who demonstrate financial need.  This scholarship is renewable.  The recipients of this scholarship are asked to attend a Summit County Medical Alliance meeting in order to be recognized in person in addition to being recognized through the organization’s publication.

The Brenda M. Weems Health Profession Scholarship---$$$$
This scholarship was established in 1999 by Brenda M. Weems, Paul G. Perantinides, Esq., and Chris T. Nolan, Esq., all graduates of The University of Akron.  Brenda Weems received her BSN in 1995 and is currently a PhD. candidate in nursing.  This scholarship was created to encourage more African American students to pursue careers in the health professions.  Recipients must be enrolled for a minimum 6 credit hours, preferably working full-time, maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0, and be ineligible for federal or state grants.  Brenda Weems selects the recipient.

The Carol Yassine Scholarship For Nursing Students In Scouting---$$$
This scholarship was established by Dr. and Mrs. Yassine who have maintained a life-long love for scouting and wish to recognize the scouting ideals of promoting good character, citizenship and service to others.  It is their hope this scholarship will support nursing students who share their commitment to scouting.  This scholarship is for one year only to students newly admitted to the College of Nursing, but may be renewed if no other qualified applicants apply.  Recipients must be accepted by the College of Nursing and submit a letter from their local scout executive attesting to their scouting achievement.  Preference is given to Akron residents.  Final determination of the recipient will be based on the extent of involvement in scouting, financial need and high school scholastic performance.  Direct Admit prenursing students active in scouting are encouraged to apply. 

The Emy White Memorial Book Loan Fund
This fund was established in 1999 by Robert and Carol Matej in memory of Emy White, a single mother who passed away suddenly in the Fall of 1998, while a student in the College of Nursing.  Emy White was an inspiration and a leader to her friends and family.  The fund is used to purchase books for students in the College of Nursing demonstrating financial need.  These books are loaned to students for the semester and returned to be used year after year.  Applications for new purchases are available in the Office of Student Affairs.  Students are limited to only one new book purchase per semester due to the high demand.  Returned books are available for use on a first come first serve basis in the Office of Student Affairs.

The Donna L. Madden Book Scholarship
This fund was established in 2007 by Donna Madden’s daughter, Dana Minor, to help deserving students in The College of Nursing to continue their education and quest to maintain academic excellence.  Mrs. Madden was a highly cherished business owner in the Akron area.  Her many friends and clients saw her as a trusted friend and respected businesswoman.  This scholarship is a demonstration of her ongoing support and belief in education.
