Instructors are American Red Cross trained Water Safety Instructors. These classes are for children of The University of Akron faculty, staff, and students, and where space permits non-members. Parent and Tot
Prerequisites:    Children 6 months to 3 years.
Infants should be able to sit up on their own before taking this class.

Trusted adults and children (6 months to 3 years) participate in 8 guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills, including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration, safety tips and more. This class is not designed to teach children to become good swimmers or even survive in the water on their own. The program does however give parents information and techniques to help orient their children to the water and to supervise water activities in a safe manner. There are no course completion requirements. Trusted adult(s) and tots are encouraged to repeat this class as necessary. A trusted adult(s) is required to accompany their tot in the water during the entire class.

Pre-school
Prerequisites:    Children 3-5 years old

Students (3 - 5 years) will focus on water adjustment and learn to be comfortable in three to four feet of water. Students will be assisted with basic skills including floating, blowing bubbles, and arm and leg movements are introduced. There are no course completion requirements. The focus is on water safety and beginning to work on skills taught in Level 1. Students are encouraged to repeat the class as necessary until be fully prepared to begin the formal Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program

Youth 1: Introduction
Prerequisites:    Children over 6 years old

This course marks the formal beginning of the Learn-to-Swim Program. Students over the age of 6 will be helped to feel comfortable and enjoy the water safely. Basic aquatic and safety skills will be taught. Some skills taught include: front and back floats and going under water.

Youth 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Prerequisites:    Maintain an unsupported front and back float for at least 5 seconds.

The objective of this level is to give students success with fundamental skills. Students learn to float without support, recover to a vertical position and basic stroke movements are introduced.  This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills. Students explore simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions to lay the foundation for future strokes.

Youth 3: Stroke
Prerequisites:    Swim 15 yards unsupported on both front and back

The objective of this level is to build on the skills learned in level 2 by providing additional guided practice. Additional guidance and practice will be stressed on basic locomotive skills learned in the previous level.  Front and back crawl coordination will be stressed, as well as elements of butterfly.  Rhythmic breathing and treading water will be introduced. Students will also learn to dive, along with safe diving rules.

Youth 4: Stroke Improvement
Prerequisites:    Swim 15 yards front crawl unsupported with rhythmic breathing

The objective of this level is to develop confidence in the strokes learned thus far, to increase the endurance level of students and gain confidence in front and back crawl, and to improve other aquatic skills. Students will continue to build on butterfly and will be introduced to elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, and turning at the wall.

Youth 5: Stroke Refinement
Prerequisites:    Swim 25 yards of both front and back crawl.  Swim breaststroke, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke scissors kick each for 15 yards.

Students will gain further coordination and refinement on strokes taught in previous levels.  Endurance on all strokes will be increased. They will also learn front and back flip turns.

Youth 5: Fitness Swimming
Prerequisites:    Swim front and back brawl each for 50 yards.  Swim breaststroke, sidestroke, and elementary backstroke each for 25 yards.  Tread water for 2 minutes

Students will further refine all strokes to gain better efficiency and power to swim with greater ease and endurance.  Students will learn how to use different swim training equipment including fins, paddles, and the pace clock. This class can also be designed to focus on Personal Water Safety, Lifeguard Readiness, or Fundamentals of Diving.

Adult Swimming
Prerequisites:    A desire to swim!

Students over the age of 16 may enroll in this class. The class is composed of basic to advanced skills that fit the level of the students.  Whether you are uncomfortable standing in waist deep water or want to work on your technique, the class is designed to cater to the needs of the students and is paced accordingly
