The Western Equestrian Team was founded in 2006. Since then the team has grown tremendously and also accomplished Reserve Champion Team for the region in 2007-2008 as well as had a rider place in the top ten at Nationals.
The Western Team competes in both horsemanship and reining through the organization, IHSA. Local colleges that the University of Akron Western Team competes with are The Ohio State University, Ohio University, Lake Erie, University of Wooster, Kent State, and Tiffin.
The IHSA is designed for riders with all levels of experience. The different divisions are as follows: Beginner, Intermediate, Novice, Advanced, and Open. Riders in each division will compete against other riders from our region in western horsemanship. Riders who qualify for the open division will have the opportunity to show in the open reining class.
All members of the team are required to take lessons from our coach as well as attend the shows. We also participate in fundraising and community service.
The Western Team is always looking for new members in the fall, no experience required! The team is a great place to meet new people and have fun riding horses.
