Captain Grad Graduates PELC
As part of the University of Akron Police Department's on-going effort to provide the best leadership possible, Captain Alan Grad was sent to the at the Police Executive Leadership College (PELC). PELC is a program designed to enhance the leadership qualities of police supervisors. The program consists of three one week sessions which are interspaced with one or two weeks back in the department between sessions. This format allows for information that was discussed in the session to reviewed and applied. It also is a time for research, and preparation for the next session. As division commander of the detective bureau, Captain Grad oversees investigations conducted by the department. Pictured here are Captain Grad and Chief Gary Vest, of the Powell Police department. Captain Alan Grad of the University of Akron Police Department graduated from the Law Enforcement Foundation's Police Executive Leadership College (PELC) on June 16, 2006. He was one of 27 students attending the forty-sixth session of the college.
PELC is an intensive, three-week leadership-training program for law enforcement executives. It is based on the premise that leadership skills can be learned, and given the opportunity for feedback and practice, that executives can substantially improve their leadership abilities. The program involves 105 class hours over three weeks on 20 topics, 24 required readings, 6 research papers, 5 community interviews, 3 speeches, and 3 team projects. Over 1,300 Ohio law enforcement executives have attended PELC since its beginning in 1988.
The Law Enforcement Foundation, in cooperation with the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, sponsors the Police Executive Leadership College. The Law Enforcement Foundation exists to develop working partnerships for the common concerns of business and police executives to foster the values of good citizenship; to enhance the prospects of secure communities; and to brighten the future through constructive social change within each Ohio community. PELC was developed to meet the goal of providing law enforcement executives with innovative and in-depth educational opportunities.
Captain Alan Grad has served with the University of Akron Police Department for 20 years. His accomplishments during that time have included: Promotion through the ranks to the rank of Captain serving currently as the Captain in charge of the Detective Bureau.
Commenting on the value and importance of PELC, Captain Grad indicated, “PELC has prepared me to be a better leader by teaching me some new skills and refreshing my existing skills, while rejuventaing my enthusiasm for the job.”
The result of Captain Grad's attendance at PELC will be evidenced in his enhanced management and leadership skills. Our agency and community will be the beneficiaries of Captain Grad's accomplishment.
