Fela Sworn In
On March 14th, 2007 the University of Akron Police department welcomed their second police K-9 into its ranks. Fela (pronounced Fay - la) was purchased again with funds from the Loker trust fund set up and managed by Gene Waddell. Officer Helmick returned to the Von Dere Haus Gill K-9 School in Wapakoneta Ohio for an abbreviated but intensive three week training schedule with Fela. Fela who was brought over from Germany had already achieved a Schutzhund phase one training title which indicated that she had the abilities to perform police -type work and was able to perform obedience, bite work and tracking.
