Patrol Division
Under the direction of Captain Jim Weber, the patrol division is responsible for the day to day response to calls for service. Patrol officers are on duty 24 hours a day 7 days a week. In a small police department an officer needs to wear many "hats". On a daily basis an officer in the patrol division of the University of Akron Police Department wears many of those "hats". Some of an officers responsibilities are to: Respond to alarms (fire, smoke, burglary, panic), make arrests, take reports of incidents (criminal and informational), transport ill or injured persons, make emergency notifications, assist in the investigation of certain cases, provide dignitary protection, perform service calls (battery jumps, lockouts of autos and buildings, give directions, etc.), maintain crowd control, direct traffic and, although we don't get calls to get cats out of trees, we do get calls to get animals out of buildings (squirrels, dogs, raccoons, etc.)
Each patrol officer is assigned to a shift as outlined below:
Day Shift: 07:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Supervising the Day Shift is Sgt. Ken Rayl. With the campus population being at it's peak during business hours, Sgt. Rayl and the day shift are never bored. Taking reports, responding to fire alarms and medical emergencies, special escorts, cruiser maintenance, traffic control, evidence management and the hundreds of other day to day responsibilities keep the day shift on their toes. Day shift is staffed with senior officers who have over 50 years of combined police experience.
Afternoon Shift 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Supervising the Afternoon Shift is Sgt. Dale Gooding. The afternoon shift handles the changing nature of the University as day time students and employees leave only to be replaced by the evening students and employees. Then, later in the evening the University once again changes as the evening students and employees leave to be replaced by a skeleton crew of maintenance and custodial personnel. Officers are kept busy during this period handling the myriad of complaints and reports as you would expect during a metamorphosis outlined above while also striving to provide a feeling of safety, security and quality services.
Night Shift 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a. m.
Our night shift supervisor is Sgt. Thomas Wykoff. When most people are headed to bed for a good nights rest, UAPD night shift heads to the streets making sure that the campus is safe and secure. Securing buildings, checking parking lots, escorting students, taking reports and assisting the Akron Police Department keep these officers busy all night long. With over 2,000 residents living on campus, and the campus itself located within an active metropolitan area, there are very few "lonely nights" at the University of Akron.
Swing Shift 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
Sgt. Cunningham is our swing shift supervisor. Sgt. Cunningham supervises during another supervisors absence (days off, etc.) . Sgt. Cunningham also is a departmental trainer in firearms, self defense, Taser and several other topics and supervises Campus Patrol our student escort service.
