K-9 Unit
From an idea to reality....
For many years the idea of a K-9 unit for the University of Akron Police department was just another item on the wish list. Budget constraints mandated that available resources be allocated elsewhere.
University of Akron Police Officer Pam Helmick had submitted proposals for the creation of a K-9 unit in the past but the cost had always been an overriding factor. When dignitaries visited campus or incidents arose where a dog was needed, one was hired or requested from another agency. If no dog were available, the department went without.
With today's emphasis on homeland security, the need to be proactive to terrorists threats and with the amount of high profile dignitaries visiting our campus, the need for a K-9 took on a whole new level of priority.
During the summer of 2004, Chief Callahan determined that there was an increased need for a K-9 unit and arranged for a demonstration with the university administration to show what a K-9 could do and why one was needed. Shortly after this demonstration, funding was appropriated through The Vern Loker Trust.
The job of becoming the first University of Akron Police K-9 handler went naturally to Officer Helmick
