What's New at UAPD!
UAPD To hire 7 new officers
As the University of Akron continues to grow and expand UAPD is growing and expanding also. "We are extremely excited about the opportunity to hire 7 new officers and we are determined to provide the safest environment possible for our community", states Chief Callahan. University of Akron police officers are "sworn officers" certified by the Ohio Police Officers Training Council. Currently the University of Akron Police department is staffed with 31sworn officers, 22 of which are directed to patrol duties. The officers not working patrol are hard at work in administration, the detective bureau or information technology. Through a mutual aid contract, UA officers work together with the City of Akron Police and patrol not only the campus proper but the surrounding neigborhood as well. If you are interested in becoming a law enforcement officer, click here for more information about how to apply. Deadline for application is March 24th, 2008 at 4:00 p.m..
UAPD Purchases SEGWAY I2 Personal Transport
The newest tool in UAPD's effort to stay well equiped and effective in it's mission is the aquisition of the Segway I2 Personal Transporter. In use by over 500 police departments, the Segway is a nimble method of getting around, especially in the urban setting here at UA. With a top speed of 12 miles per hour the Segway may not seem especially quick, but considering that it can do that top speed for over 20 miles, one can see that you probably won't get too many people out running the Segway for very long. The additional height of the Segway offers officers a chance to "see above the crowd" and it's zero turning radius allows officers to manuever through the crowd without running over any toes.
So far the main usage for this vehicle has been at home football games at the Rubberbowl. The UAPD Segway can be seen zipping around the apron in front of the bowl as chores from team busses to handicap parking usually have our officers running from one side of the apron to the other. Not with the Segway on duty! Watch for it on campus. As more of our officers are trained on this personal transport device, the more you will see them on campus. And since the Segway runs on batteries, it is another way UAPD is helping to go Blue, Gold and Green!
Sgt. Rayl Graduates from FBI Academy
Over the summer, Sgt. Ken Rayl (dayshift sergeant) headed to Quantico Virginia for some of the most intensive police related training in the world. The FBI national academy is one of the foremost law enforcement academys in the world and it's reputation is second to none. Now back at UA, Sgt Rayl is putting his training to good use as he works to provide a feeling of safety and security for all who attend the University of Akron. Sgt. Rayl stated that he was most impressed with the networking that he was able to do at the academy. Getting to meet and associate with law enforcement officers from all over the globe was an awesome experience he stated. Sgt. Rayl also indicated that he looked forward to utilizing the skills he learned at the academy, especially in the areas of report analysis.
Major Engle and Mark Beers participate in safety panel - talk in Polskys
On Wednesday May 2nd, 2007, UAPD's assistant chief of police Major M. Engle participated in the Summit College - Department of Public Service Technology & The Training Center for Fire and Hazardous Materials symposium:
PREPARING FOR THE UNTHINKABLE: A ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ON SAFETY AND SECURITY AT UA and SUMMIT COLLEGE
The symposium was structured to have presentors speak for an hour, then to open the floor to a question and answer period with a panel of safety professionals. The symposium was presented in a morning and afternoon session with different presenters in the afternoon. Major Engle gave a presentation on responding to critical incidents during the morning session and sat on both panels with Mark Beers U of A's Coordinator of Emergency Management. Major Engle stated, "Not only was the information presented by the experts invaluable but the feedback and ideas presented by the audience was extremely beneficial as well."
The University of Akron police department has trained extensively to handle situations such as what happened at Viriginia Tech and has even done roll playing senarios with student organizations volunteering as victims and suspects.
UAPD Officers Donate to Katrina Relief Effort
The day after Christmas began a 2400 mile round trip for Cpl. Stachowiak and his family as they headed south to Pass Christian, Mississippi as part of a missions trip to help rebuild houses. Towed behind the family van was a travel trailer that was being donated to the relief efforts by Cpl. Stachowiak and his parents. To help defray the cost of towing and restoring the vehicle, a collection at UAPD was taken. UAPD officers donated over $200 to the cause to get the trailer to Pass Christian and help further the rebuilding effort. The trailer was gifted to a Christian missions team to use as they saw fit.
Pictured to the left is the trailer on the job site in Mississippi. It has been used by several families who have gone to help the rebuilding effort in the Pass Christian - Long Beach Area. Rebuilding efforts are still only scratching the surface of the damage that Katrina inflicted on the Gulf Coast. Pictured to the right is a development called Camille Estates. Built in the early 70's as a rebuilding effort by the federal government after hurricane Camille, this development was completely flooded during Katrina. 18 months after Katrina, the building interiors have been completely removed and gutted but the trash still sits outside waiting to be hauled away. Click here for more Katrina Pictures taken by Cpl. Stachowiak during his trip.
UAPD wishes to take this opportunity to thank the 60 University of Akron students who will be traveling to the Pass Christian area to work with Americorps spring break 2007. Go Zips!
UAPD Officers Participate in Shop with a Cop program 2006
in Summit and Portage County
For the second year in a row, members of the University of Akron Police Department have participated in the Portage County, Shop with a Cop program directed by the Ravenna Police Department. This year UAPD sent officers not only to Portage County but participated in the Summit County Shop with a Cop program as well!
Shop with a cop in Portage County is supported by funds from the community as well as law enforcement officials. UAPD sent seven officers and a volunteer to Portage County Shope with a Cop.
In Summit County police officers sell raffle tickets to raise money for the children. UAPD Officers sold enough raffle tickets to raise money for seven Summit County children to be taken to Walmart for a shopping spree! The picture to the right was taken at the Portage County Shop with a cop program. In the back row from left to right: Sgt. Taylor, Officer Kouri, Sgt. Rayl, Cpl. Stachowiak, Sgt. Should you have a concern about your safety on campus, please feel free to complete our "Drop a line on crime" survey. If you would like to schedule a talk by a crime prevention specialist, please call 330.972.7123 and ask the dispatcher to put you in touch with the crime prevention supervisor.
Sgt. Taylor Graduates PELC class number 47
UAPD is always looking to improve our officers and their leadership abilities. Sgt. Bryan Taylor recently graduated from the Police Executive Leadership College ( PELC).
PELC is a program designed to enhance the leadership qualities of police supervisors. The program consists of three one week sessions which are interspaced with one or two weeks back in the department between sessions. This format allows for information that was discussed in the session to be reviewed and applied. It also is a time for research, and preparation for the next session.
UA officers save life , Officer Burnette presents award.
On May 14th, 2005 UAPD officers Burnette and Lohrum responded to a medical emergency call at the Posh night club on Exchange St. in downtown Akron. The officers assisted two off duty paramedics who were performing CPR on 24 year old Michelle Deleganese. Deleganese had gone into cardiac arrest due to a previously undetected heart defect. Officer Burnette brought an automated external defibrillator (AED) from the trunk of his UAPD cruiser and the two officers were able to restart a heart and save a life.
Each UAPD cruiser is equipped with an AED and all officers receive training in their operation. The device actually tells the operators what to do with pre-recorded instructions providing step by step instructions on pad placement and to shock or not to shock.
Dr. Terry Gordon headed up a program of putting an AED in every police cruiser in Summit County. For his work on the AED project, Dr. Gordon was named the Doctor of the Year award at the Docs that Rock concert at E.J. Thomas Hall on October 14th, 2006. The American Heart Association asked Officer Burnette to present the award.
