Chief Of Police
 Paul J. Callahan - appointed chief of police by The University of Akron Board of Trustees, Aug. 26 2002. A graduate of the FBI national academy and the University Akron, Chief Callahan served in the Akron Police Department for 31 years rising to the rank of Deputy Chief and Commander of the Investigative Subdivision.
Chief Callahan holds two degrees and a certificate from the University of Akron. He earned an associate of applied sciences in criminal justice certificate in 1976, a bachelor's degree in technical education in 1979 and a master's degree in business administration in 1997.

Assistant Chief
 Major Marling "Newt" Engle graduated from The University of Akron with an Associates degree in Criminal Justice and a Bachelors degree in Political Science. He joined the UA police force in 1979 and has been the Assistant Chief of Police since 2000.
Major Engle is a member and national training conference presenter for the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI), and The American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers (ASLET). Major Engle is a 1998 graduate of the Police Executive Leadership College (P.E.L.C.) and is currently serving as a member of the board of the Police Executive Leadership College Alumni Association (P.E.L.C.A.A.). Major Engle is a 2004 graduate of the 13 month Certified Law Enforcement Executive program .
 He is state certified to instruct all the firearms disciplines as well as most of the state required peace officer training curriculum. Major Engle is a staff and guest instructor at numerous training academies in the state of Ohio.
Major Engle is also a Class A certified NCAA division I, rifle coach and has been the Head Coach for The University of Akron Varsity Rifle Team since 1978. The Rifle team coached by Newt Engle has consistently been ranked as one of the top 20 teams in the nation. Coach Engle has also been a guest coach for the National Junior Smallbore Training camp and several state of Ohio training clinics.  Email: Mengle@Uakron.edu

Detective Captain

 Captain Grad is a graduate of Kent Roosevelt High School and the Portage County Sheriff's Department Police Academy. Captain Grad was a Portage County Deputy assigned to the Patrol Division from 1982-1986.
Captain Grad began his career at the University of Akron in 1986 and has held the ranks of: officer, detective sergeant and captain.  Captain Grad is a graduate of the Police Executive Leadership College(PELC).
As Captain of the Detective Bureau, Captain Grad oversees: daily Detective Bureau assignments, Dignitary Protection Teams, and Computer Forensics Investigations.
He is also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police.

Patrol Captain
 James P. Weber served as the Interim Police Chief for The University of Akron Police Department from May 6th, to August 26th, 2002.
Captain Weber has served as a police officer since 1987 and has worked patrol, investigative and supervisory assignments for municipal police and state university law enforcement.
Captain Weber began his tour of duty at the University of Akron on July 30th, 1990 and was promoted to the position of Sergeant in June 5th of 1995. As a sergeant, Captain Weber oversaw the daily operations of the Wayne college branch of the University of Akron Police department. On February 1st, 2001 he was appointed Captain of the Patrol division of the University police department and was responsible for all daily patrol operations.
While Interim Chief , he oversaw all aspects of departmental operations and implemented the formation of a departmental wide Community-Oriented Policing strategy. He is a graduate of The University of Akron with a B.S. in Technical Education and a graduate of the Police Executive Leadership College (PELC) and the FBI National Academy.

Services Captain
Due to the retirement of Captain MacFarland, the duties of this position are being performed by Major  Engle, Captain Grad and Captain Weber.   It is expected that a replacement will be named in the near future.


Information Technology
 Corporal Stachowiak graduated from Green High School in 1976. He is a graduate of the Portage County Sheriff's police academy and has an associates degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Akron.
Corporal Stachowiak was hired by the University of Akron Police in 1980 and has held the ranks of Security Guard, Security Guard Supervisor, Police Officer and Corporal.  During his tenure with the University Police, Corporal Stachowiak has been a: defensive tactics instructor, academy instructor, supervisor for student assistants, and a temporary acting Patrol Sergeant.
Corporal Stachowiak is currently titled as the Departmental Systems Administrator and is responsible for all computer hardware, software maintenance and training as well as other technology related issues within the department. He also supervises the assignment of overtime for University police officers and the maintenance of the departmental library. Corporal Stachowiak is currently the chair of the University of Akron Staff Advisory Committee (SEAC) an advisory committee to the President of the University of Akron.  Corporal Stachowiak studies martial arts and is currently rated a 1st Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.
