The Academy
 Officer Helmick was sent to the Von Dere Haus Gill K-9 School in Wapakoneta Ohio, April 22, 2005 where she met her partner Hera. Hera is a Chez bread Shepherd and was two years old. The two partners then spent weeks in the handler school working on tracking suspects, odor recognition, bite work and basic handling skills.
Officer Helmick became the first female handler to graduate from the school and together with Hera were certified in explosive detection, tracking, area searches, article searches, building searches, and suspect apprehension.
They are currently certified through the Ohio Police Officers Training Academy (OPOTA), the National Police Work Dog Association (NPWDA) and the International Police Work Dog Association (IPWDA)
