FAQ
Are University of Akron Police officers "real" police officers?
Yes! UAPD officers are given their arrest powers through Ohio Revised Code 3345.04. (State university law enforcement officers)
which states that the board of trustees of a state university have the right to designate university law enforcement officers. As a university law enforcement officer, the officers of the University of Akron are given full police powers on campus. UAPD officers must be certified by the Ohio Police Officers Training Commission (OPOTC) and are sworn in by the appointing authority of the University.
Are officers only able to arrest on campus property?
No! The University of Akron and the City of Akron have entered into a mutual aid agreement which legally allows university law enforcement officers to affect arrests off campus for criminal violations. The University of Akron also maintains mutual aid agreements with all other state university police departments. This allows for UAPD to aid and request aid from other university police departments. UAPD officers have assisted Ohio University police during Halloween and have been assisted by Kent State police during a visit to UA by President Clinton.
Are UAPD officers armed?
Yes! Just as any police officer in an urban environment, University of Akron officers are armed with all levels of defensive weapons. Officers are equipped with batons, chemical agents, Tazers, and firearms. University of Akron officers have the necessary tools to ensure the safety of all members of the university community.
What is the best way to report a crime?
If you are still on campus you can call X7123 from any campus phone. A dispatcher will send an officer to your location. If you are leaving the campus and heading home, you can stop in at Station 1 located at 146 Hill St. just north of E.J. Thomas hall. An officer will be called off the road to handle your incident. Off campus reports are restricted to one or two blocks off campus, otherwise UAPD requests that you wait until you return to campus to file a report. Reports will not be taken over the phone.
My car was broken into just off campus, who do I call?
You will need to call the City of Akron Police Department at 330.375.2181 or if the crime is in progress, call 911. In the unlikely event that the Akron Police Department wishes to enact mutual aid, they will call us. In the event that University of Akron property is stolen, please call UAPD to notify us. If possible, have the City of Akron Police report number available so that we can get a copy of their report.
