Campus Patrol
Campus Patrol was founded in the early 1980s and for the last 25 years has performed duties that the department is called upon to do that do not require a sworn officer. Some of these duties include: service calls to vehicles that are out of gas or need a battery jump or lock out, escorting of parties who do not feel safe walking alone, delivery of important papers to other departments on and off campus, pickup of lost and found items from other departments, opening and securing buildings, and a host of other miscellaneous duties. By utilizing student assistants to perform these duties, the department can focus the police manpower that it has for emergency or criminal calls. As our campus has grown, the need for more eyes in the campus community has grown as well. Campus patrol has the ability to alert dispatch by radio of any suspicious activity occuring on campus so that officers may respond to check out the situation.
Battery Jumps and Vehicle Lockouts
As a service to our campus community, the University of Akron police department provides free lockout and battery jump service to the community. Campus Patrol is trained in how to handle these duties so as to keep officers free to handle more serious issues. Should you have a need for these services, please have the following information handy when you call; Your lot number and the location in the lot (i.e. West Campus Parking Deck, High street level), your license plate number, make and color of your call and your exact location if you are not with your vehicle. For battery jumps, open your hood if possible to help the Patrol locate your vehicle. Lockouts will only be performed for those people presenting proper identification which corresponds with the vehicle registration.
Student Escort Service
From 5:00PM till Midnight Campus Patrol is available during school semesters. Patrol members are able to be identified by their maroon Campus Patrol shirts or blue Campus Patrol jackets. They also will be carrying a UAPD radio and are able to be contacted by calling 330.972.7263. Patrol members will escort a person from and to their car or dorm or one of the regular campus buildings but will not escort a person to or from a bar. In the more than 25 years of escorting students, Campus Patrol has a 100% rating of successfully escorting students to their destination without an incident.
