Training
In Service Training
The University of Akron Police Department meets and exceeds all state mandated training requirements. Firearm qualifications, first aid, and other mandated training is attended yearly. Officers are also able to attend Advanced Training classes that are held on campus. Many officers are instructors in their areas of expertise.
Basic Police Academy
The University of Akron Police Department operated a Basic Training academy between 1990 and 1997. The Academy produced many outstanding recruits with graduates in over 50 departments across the state. In 1997 it was determined that the academy should be turned over to The University of Akron Community and Technical College, Department of Criminal Justice. The academy covers approximately 550 hours of training and graduates are certified by the Ohio Peace Officers Training Council after they pass a comprehensive state exam.
Advanced Training
The University of Akron Police Department has always been actively involved in advanced training of officer in this and other departments in the Akron area. The University of Akron Police Department has arranged for nationally renowned instructors to teach topics ranging from Verbal Judo to First Line Supervision skills. Advanced training is scheduled on a regular basis and as needs for specific training are determined. Firing Range
The University of Akron Police Department maintains an indoor firing range in Shrank Hall. The range is a 50', 10 stall facility which can simulate low light and blue revolving light situations. The range is used by the University of Akron Police department, the University of Akron Rifle Team and The University of Akron ROTC program. The range facility is rented to other police departments to help defray the cost of maintenance.
