UAPD Purchases SEGWAY I2 Personal Transport
The newest tool in UAPD's effort to stay well equipped and effective in it's mission is the acquisition of the Segway I2 Personal Transporter. In use by over 500 police departments, the Segway is a nimble method of getting around, especially in the urban setting here at UA. With a top speed of 12 miles per hour the Segway may not seem especially quick, but considering that it can do that top speed for over 20 miles, one can see that you probably won't get too many people out running the Segway for very long. The additional height of the Segway offers officers a chance to "see above the crowd" and it's zero turning radius allows officers to maneuver through the crowd without running over any toes.
So far the main usage for this vehicle has been at home football games at the Rubberbowl. The UAPD Segway can be seen zipping around the apron in front of the bowl as chores from team busses to handicap parking usually have our officers running from one side of the apron to the other. Not with the Segway on duty! Watch for it on campus. As more of our officers are trained on this personal transport device, the more you will see them on campus. And since the Segway runs on batteries, it is another way UAPD is helping to go Blue, Gold and Green!
