Rationale:
RATIONALE FOR BIOETHICS MINOR

The term "bioethics" was coined by Van Rensselaer Potter in 1971 (Bioethics: Bridge to the Future, Prentice-Hall) and has now become a specialized, interdisciplinary area of study. The ethical issues it encompasses include abortion, assisted reproduction, the new genetics (gene therapy, germ-line engineering), euthanasia, assisted-suicide, brain death, allocation of resources, organ harvesting and transplantation, experimentation on human subjects and animals, confidentiality and informed consent in the practice of health care, and ethical issues of IRBs and ethics committees. These bioethical issues are of great concern to everyone and penetrate innumerable academic disciplines. A Bioethics Minor can greatly enhance virtually any student's curriculum. Hence this proposal.

The extensive list of elective courses is so for the purpose of allowing students to fit this minor in most easily with their major. For example, an economics major may want to go into hospital administration, and a bioethics minor would enhance their preparation. The extensive list allows for maximal adaptability for students' interdisciplinary interests, plans, and goals.
