| Rationale: |
| The term "popular literature and film" refers to productions designed for mass appeal, mainstream consumption, and mass distribution. These productions reflect the beliefs and preferences of the large, mainstream audience that supports them. The conventions and patterns of popular literature and film typically reveal the underlying cultural assumptions about such concepts as authority, family responsibility, and gender roles. The study of popular literature and film examines how these productions influence audience beliefs and also how the desire for a mass audience influences the shape and production of popular arts. The Department of English now offers a number of courses that focus on popular literature, popular film, or a combination. The student interested particularly in critical analysis of these arts will find in this minor a way to focus his/her studies.
