Rationale:
Program faculty do not believe this test is a necessary component of counseling-related application materials; regional competitors (e.g., Kent State University counseling programs) do not require the GRE test as part of their application process; no other department in the College of Education requires a formal admission test such as the GRE as part of their application process for master’s degrees; respective accrediting bodies do not stipulate that a qualifying examination is needed as part of prospective students’ application process; given the added expense for students, and the additional/more relevant admission information already obtained from applicants, the GRE test is an unnecessary deterrent to applicants.
Bulletin description:
[Under the current ‘Programs, Counseling’ section of the Graduate Bulletin (p. 44), the following statement will be removed: “The Graduate Record Examination (General Test) will be used as the qualifying examination in all Counseling master’s programs.”

References to the GRE as an admission requirement in Counseling program-specific language will be removed where applicable. See below.]
