| Rationale: |
| The addition of a graduate healthcare certificate program is based on market trends and projections in the region and across the country. According to Business Week, health care has accounted for as much as a third of new private jobs in recent times. Locally, there are about 62 hospitals in the 13 county region including at least four nationally ranked service providers and a host of peripheral healthcare service companies. Recently, there has also been a wave of healthcare startups in the region accounting for nearly 25% of all healthcare venture capital in the Midwest in the first half of 2007 alone. Not surprisingly, the healthcare industry is one of the region's top employers, providing more than 100,000 jobs and generating an estimated $9 billion in income.
The certificate structure and content is based on feedback about required skills and competencies from executives at a recent Healthcare Forum hosted by the Department of Management. We anticipate that the target population for this certificate program would include clinical specialists (such as radiologists) or other individuals in allied fields such as Biomedical Engineering who want an overall perspective of the Healthcare field. We also expect that the certificate will be an attractive option to individuals who have prior business experience but are seeking new opportunities in the healthcare industry. The decision to start a graduate certificate in healthcare management is also motivated by recent discussions with a local hospital, where several individuals have expressed an interest in a customized certificate option. Our expectation is that they are interested in this program starting as early as Fall 2008. Any individual with a bachelor’s degree who is admitted to the Graduate School may enroll in this certificate program. |

| Healthcare is one of the fastest growing sectors in the economy. According to some estimates, health care has accounted for as much as a third of new private jobs in recent times. The healthcare management certificate program is designed for students to understand the structure and components of the healthcare sector and their interdependencies. In addition, students will learn how services such as ambulatory care and inpatient care will affect the cost, quality, and accessibility of healthcare delivery.
Persons are eligible for admission to the graduate certificate program if they have been admitted to the Graduate School at The University of Akron. Students admitted to the healthcare management certificate program may enroll only in those courses required for the completion of the certificate.
