Brief Summary of ProposalResearch and study in this area have grown at an exceptional rate, creating a greatly expanded literature. In order to adequately address the topic and to continue to provide students with the appropriate, in-depth knowledge of the material, it is proposed that an existing course, the Black Experience Since 1877, be expanded into two parts. A new course, The Black Experience 1877 - 1954 will be part one of that expansion. This course will examine the African American experience from 1877-1954 and will cover topics including failure of the 1st Reconstruction, the Era of “Jim Crow”/ Separate but Equal doctrine, and the social, political, economic, cultural and educational development of African Americans during the first half of the 20th Century. (Note: When the two new courses are approved, the Black Experience Since 1877 will no longer be offered and will be deleted from the curriculum.)
