Brief Summary of ProposalIn accordance with the University of Akron's goal to promote globally minded education, Dr. Janet Klein in the History Department proposes this certificate program which has been approved by the History Department, which will run the interdisciplinary program. This certificate program was formed as part of the larger activities of the new Global Studies Initiative, which was formed at the behest of Dean Levant in spring, 2006. The Certificate Program in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Akron offers interdisciplinary certificates in Asian Studies (including East, South East, or South) or Middle Eastern Studies for undergraduates as well as graduate students. The structure of each certificate option provides students a good amount of flexibility and the opportunity to count certain key courses towards their General Education requirements. Strategic languages of East Asia or the Middle East are required, and a wide range of courses in fields including History, Anthropology, Political Science, Economics, Geography, Sociology, and Business are offered. Study abroad in an Asian or Middle Eastern country is strongly encouraged. This proposal is for the graduate tracks in either Asian or Middle Eastern Studies.
