| Brief Summary of Proposal | The Department of Geology and Environmental Science is proposing a new class to be taught. It will be an introductory undergraduate course (proposed course number is 3370-112-001). This course is designed to introduce students to the history of life. It will focus on the fossil record, from the origins of life to the development of the tree of life, emphasizing the origin of fish, amphibians, insects, land plants, mammals, dinosaurs, and birds. The nature of the fossil record will be examined, addressing questions of how fossils get preserved, biological diversity patterns through time, including mass extinction events. By the end of the course, students will have acquired the skills to critically analyze the nature of the fossil record as well as evaluate evidence for the history of life in the context of modern evolutionary theory. Course will be directed and aimed towards general education as well as biology students in the Integrated Bioscience program. |
