| Brief Summary of Proposal | The History Department would like to propose a new course on the History of Women in Latin America. This course will help expand the Department's offerings in non-western topics and gender, and in this way it will also contribute to the University's current emphasis on global studies. The course will also be a valuable addition to the Latin American Studies Certificate program. The course examines changes and continuities in the lives of Latin American women since the colonial period until the present. The courses focuses on the ideologies of gender that have assigned specific places and roles for women of different racial, ethnic and class backgrounds, as well as the ways in which women have approximated, challenged and transformed those gender definitions in their daily lives. The course also introduces students to theories and methodologies in the study of women's history. |
