Brief Summary of ProposalOur new East Asian specialist, Gang Zhao, would prefer to position a history of Japan with a broader East Asian context. The existing course description implies the broader context: "Emphasis on modernization and the rise of the Japanese empire, 1894-1945" which was an East Asia empire and modern East Asia cannot be described without considerable reference to it. Thus the change of title simply broadens the focus.
