| Brief Summary of Proposal | As Iraqis debate the nature of the society they hope to rebuild after the war, history becomes an important guide, weapon, and symbol not only of the past but for the future of Iraq. This course will offer a complex and nuanced look into the history of Iraq and will situate current events firmly in their historical context. In addition to focus on Iraqi state and society, this course will also spend considerable time examining the history behind the creation of a new Iraqi, and yet non-Iraqi, entity--Kurdistan, in the context of this quasi-state’s new slogan, “Kurdistan: The Other Iraq.” This course has previously been taught under the 300-level special topics number. |
