Brief Summary of ProposalThis proposal is to add the course 3400: 518 History of Brazil Since 1500 to the History Department course offerings. This course will add an important component to the Department's offerings, as it focuses on one of the main "emerging powers" from the Southern Hemisphere, a leader in the negotiations for the redefinition of free trade between the United States and other countries, and the largest and most populous country of Latin America. This course will contribute to the emphasis on global studies at the University. The course focuses on the economic, political, social and cultural history of Brazil, since 1500 until the present, underlining issues of development, political participation, national consciousness, as well as gender, race, and ethnicity. As a graduate-level history class, this course will introduce graduate students to various approaches to the study of Brazilian history and to the main historiographical debates in the field.
