Brief Summary of ProposalChange course number of "Geography of Cultural Diversity" from 3350:375 to 3350:275 in conjunction with similar change in World Civilizations courses (see History department's proposal AS-08-105). Both types of courses meet the same General Education requirement, so they should be similar in level.

GEAC CommentConcerns and questions about this proposal were raised, as listed below, in no order of priority. The rationale provided by the Dept. is based on AS-08-105, so our response is in that context. The proposal cannot be approved in its present form, and needs to be substantially revised. A. Having these courses at the 300 level ensures that students are engaged in writing and cultural awareness through their academic careers. Moving these courses to the 200 level could reinforce the idea that some students may have of "getting Gen. Ed. out of the way" which is not in our best interests. Integrating liberal education throughout the student experience is important, and was one of the reasons that these courses were originally set at the 300 level. B. The proposal did not describe any course changes to the current offerings. How can a current 300 level course be changed to 200 level without a change in the curriculum and expectations of students? Either 200 level students will be over-taxed and ill-prepared for the rigor of the class and the writing required, or 300 level students are not being appropriately challenged. The department should consider what course changes are needed to more clearly distinguish these as 200 level courses. Entirely new curricula should be proposed, not simply a number change, or an explanation of how current offerings have migrated toward being more appropriately defined as meeting the rigor of a 200 versus a 300 level course. C. We fear that students will not be well served by the change as proposed, and that faculty may find that teaching to a different group of students (those less academically mature and with less writing and presentation practice) challenging. D. How will this proposed change in pre-requisites affect transfer and articulation? E. How will this pre-requisite change affect other General Education offerings which also have the 64 credit hour requirement? Coordinating changes with other departments ahead of time will avoid objections being filed and a potentially long process that may include hearings before the Curriculum Review Committee. F. Learning outcomes and their measurement metrics are missing, and need to be added to all Gen. Ed. syllabi. The Department of Geography and Planning is invited to work with the Institute for Teaching and Learning to ensure that this happens.
