| Brief Summary of Proposal | Although many courses offered by History faculty utilize films as pedagogical tools(particularly documentaries or films set in the past), we wish to create a course that will examine films, film-making, and film-spectatorship as particular kinds of historical evidence. We are choosing a general title, "History and Film", so that the specific content of the course, as well as its primary themes and approaches, may be adjusted for different faculty specializations. In all cases, a course on history and film would allow students to study the historicity of film, its significance as a cultural experience, its influential role as a political and ideological force, and as a preeminent form of mass media in the 20th century and beyond. (See proposal AS-08-130 for the 500-level portion.) |
